Most of the major airlines around the world, as well as tighter security have changed their baggage quotas and fees. Before packing your luggage it is important to know what the various fees and restrictions are. Calling up the airline is advised, but as of writing this article, the following fees for the major airlines are as follows:

American Airlines

$15 for the first checked bag, $25 for the second checked item, $100 for the 3rd, 4th and 5th (per item) and $200 for the 6th checked bag. If a bag is oversized or overweight by 50 lbs/23kg but not more than 70lbs/32kg you will be charged $50 per piece. If it is over by 70lbs/32kg but not more than 100lbs/45kg you will be charged $100 per piece.

Air Canada

As part of their economy service you are allowed 2 bags checked for free, that are no more than 23kg/50lbs. As part of their Executive class you are allowed 3 bags checked for free, that are no more than 32kb/70lbs. As part of their Star Alliance Gold class you are allowed 3 bags that are no more than 23kg/50lbs. And as part of their Elite class you are allowed 4 bags that are no more than 32kg/70lbs. All bags must not exceed 158cm linear dimension.

United Airlines

$15 for the first checked bag and $50 for the second checked bag. If you need more bags checked you will be subject to a $125 per bag fee up until the 7th bag which will then be $250 per bag. Bags that go over 50lbs/23kg will be charged an extra $125. Bags that go over 158cm linear dimension will be charged an extra $125 per bag.

British Airways

Depending on your class and where you are flying you may be entitled to more or less baggage, but each bag should not exceed 23kg and 158cm in linear dimension.

This list is not exhaustive, but most other airlines have similar fees, so you should generally travel light. Make sure you are prepared if you have more than 2 checked bags per person.

* All Fees are subject to change so make sure you have called the airline or checked their web site for more up to date information.
